LET US SAIL ESUANDEL
Elrond, a Lord of the elves stood on a balcony in Rivendell. Below him
were gathered many more of his kin, waiting to hear of their hidden future.
Beside him stood Arwen, his beloved daughter, black hair flowing gracefully with
the wind. Above them the arches of the palace curved up to a blue-grey sky. He
wondered if he would ever regret it when this beautiful place was silent and
deserted.
Fair elves spoke Elrond from his balcony our time has come and
gone. We have long lived on this earth, fighting beside the other races and
celebrating with them for what we have gained. We will no longer gain in these
dark times but lose what little we have kept. We are immortal and will only
linger in a land of shadow when all else is gone and destroyed. There will be
one day when the sun fails to rise. Even our bright stars will be smothered with
the ashes of doom. There is nothing left for us here.
Elrond then looked over at Arwen. Her eyes were filling with tears and
she was staring into the distance, past everything, past even existence. Quietly
he heard her whisper let it not be this way, there is still something here
that I cannot leave.
The sky had become darker and he looked back to his elves. Far across
the deep vast waters of the sea Elrond continued, there is a place we must
visit. It is our destiny, the destiny of all elves. Our eternal life will be
peaceful and serene. If we stay it will be painfully shattered. We will become
ugly slaves to the Dark Lord and be forced to join his ever-massing armies. This
cannot, will not happen. We must journey over the clear water to a place where a
light will ever be brightly shining. Fair folk, look at the sun setting, he
then gestured to the golden glow low in the sky. As he lowered his hand he said,
may this not be the time when it ceases its cycle and we are thrown into
blackness that is never to be lifted. Then he raised both his voice and his
arms. Let us think of what lies ahead of the elves. Let the ocean receive us.
Let us sail to this undying land. Let us sail, let us sail. His voice faded
into silence and his hands dropped.
When Elrond spoke again his tone was much lower and his eyes wistful.
Sing, my daughter, sing to me once more the song of our spirit of the sea.
Her sad pure voice unwavering, Arwen sang:
Dance light the footsteps of the sea
Bright stars within
the clear water
Reflect what may of may not be
The shining suns
pure star daughter.
Her fair beauty is never lost
Yet mysterious as was
she
And for this, that much it cost
Her great love as it
was for he.
Waves of water formed around her
Him embracing her
forever
And there it stood like trees of fir
Thought he to let her
go never.
Her lungs were filled with water cold
So slowly out of her
life seeped
Her death and pain seemed much too bold
To make him mournful,
for her weeped.
There stopped time for those young lovers
When they were happy
is no more
She is under shining covers
Under the sea,
heavens fair core.
His only wish is now to die
Yet should he fail
the sea would still
All life sucked out now smooth to lie
His quest, a spirits
life to fill.
Elronds face was hard and emotionless when the song ended. He was
dreaming, dreaming to see his fair Celebrian again, dreaming of love. The elves
moved silently away and soon he and Arwen were alone. The rush of the river
called Elrond back to Rivendell. He turned to his daughter and saw tears
streaming down her pale cheeks.
You know that you cannot stay here. He said Aragorn is a man and
you an elf. He will die long before you are taken. You will be left alone to
wander the forests and fields until death comes for you.
Arwen stared at the far away landscape and almost whispered, I have
still some hope, and it will never leave me.
Fresh wind swept then into that elven palace and on it was the scent of
freedom, pride, and hope. |
